Dutch traffic planners support visualization of particle exposure

Good and bad examples on film

Civil servants at the traffic planning departments of Dutch municipalities think that real-time visualizations (videos) of particle exposure of cyclists might be a valuable novelty. They think that the visualizations are specifically suitable for showing ‘good practices’ and ‘bad practices’ in the design of urban cycling infrastructures. Regarding the design of the videos, they advised to show ‘split-screen’ pictures with the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ practice next to each other

Different pratices at a glance: combined roads (left) and dedicated cycling routes (right).

Civil servants in nine Dutch cities were interviewed by a student Environmental Sciences from University of Groningen. The student, Jésus Rosales Carreon, is working on the issue of the Communication strategy in the VECTOR project, on behalf of IVAM. His work includes a literature study on (environmental) risk perception and on risk communication strategies, a description of ‘good practices’ in risk communication, the design of a questionnaire or interview checklist that will be used in the VECTOR communication experiment, and the execution of a first pilot-test on the impact of the visualisations.

His work will be finished in August 2007, and presented at the next project team meeting, on September 13-14 in Utrecht.
